Overview of the 3D Championship 2009 competition

The competition will be held on Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th September 2009 and contains three rounds of competitive flights, as follows:

  • One round of 4 set manoeuvres within a freestyle flight
  • One 3 minute freestyle round
  • One 3 minute freestyle round set to music

The combined scores of the two highest scoring rounds will determine the fly-off positions.

The pilots lowest scoring round will be dropped.

The fly-offs will see the top five pilots from each group perform their flights again (from a zeroed score) and the result of these fly-offs will determine the winners.

Freestyle flight containing Set Manoeuvres

Pilots will fly their choice of 4 set manoeuvres (from the published list - click to view the list with descriptions).

Flights should be between 2 and a half (2.5) and 3 and a half (3.5) minutes in length.

Pilots will not fly to music in this round.

Each set manoeuvre within the flight will be awarded a score out of 10 and multiplied by that manoeuvres K factor.

The overall flight appearance will be awarded points out of 50.

Total maximum points for the round is 190 (4x K3.5 manoeuvres + 50 for freestyle element)

See the judging document for details on how this round will be judged.

Freestyle Flight

The flight should be as close to 3 minutes in length as possible.

Pilots will not fly to music in this round.

See the judging document for details on how this round will be judged.

Flight to Music

The fight should be between 2 minutes and 50 seconds (2:50) and 3 minutes and 10 (3:10) seconds in length.

See the judging document for details on how this round will be judged.

Important notes

  • Pilots should aim to perform set manoeuvres at the highest K factor they are capable of in order to maximise their score.
  • Pilots may change their chosen set manoeuvres up to one month prior to the event - the cut off date is Friday 28th August. Changes requested after this date will only be made at the discretion of the organisers.
  • Championship groupings will be split by K factor with the higher group of pilots competing in the Champions group and the lower group competing in the Intermediates group.
  • The freestyle round set to music in the initial stage and on the fly-offs may be dropped from the schedule if the weather restricts the available flying time over the competition weekend.
  • All music is the pilots own choice but must be edited to be public broadcast friendly (think Radio Edit) and should be long enough to cover the three minutes of flight.
  • Music should be submitted to us for preparation by no later than August 28th - we will add introductory beeps to the beginning of the music (or download them from the downloads page and add them yourself).
  • All scores will be normalised.
